A Guide To Cord-Cutting for College Students

A Guide To Cord-Cutting for College Students

Subscriptions to streaming services can quickly add up, and that can be tough for a college student who is trying to budget their expenses. With the COVID-19 pandemic, staying in and binge-watching a show has become a standard Friday night for many after a long week of classes. Instead of spending an insane amount of money finding entertainment during this time, here’s a guide to cord-cutting for college students.

Take Advantage of College Deals

Some college students might not realize how many discounts are out there for them. Some streaming services offer student discounts that lower the monthly price if you let them know that you are currently attending college. Some universities also offer a free account for streaming that can give you access to HBO and more. While it might only be a few extra dollars off, this can save you a ton of money long-term and allow you to get the entertainment you need.

Use the Right Device

A subscription isn’t the only thing college students need to worry about—they also need to find a way to get the shows they want on your TV. If you already own a laptop and an HDTV, the most affordable option is to get an HDMI cord. However, you can also find a Chromecast, Roku Streaming Stick, or Amazon Fire TV Stick for less than $50 if you don’t own a smart TV. You can also stream off your gaming console if you have one.

Buy a TV Antenna

The biggest problem college students face when it comes to cord-cutting is missing out on live TV. This is where a TV antenna comes in handy. You can find TV antennas in the $30 price range that will allow you access to a variety of free channels. Many modern TV antennas also come in HD, so you don’t have to sacrifice display quality either!

Bundle Up, Save Money

Many streaming services also have different bundles you can choose from that can help save you money in the long run. For example, you can bundle Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESPN Plus for $13 a month. Students can also get Hulu and Showtime with a Spotify Premium account for only $5 a month. Instead of subscribing to one streaming service, look for bundles first!

Don’t Forget Your Login-Ins From Home

The last part of our guide to cord-cutting for college students is to not forget about your log-ins from home. If your parents have streaming accounts that you typically use at home, take them with you to college, so you don’t have to pay for it on your own. However, you might want to ask before you run off with their account passwords.

5 Careers You Didn’t Know Barbie Had

5 Careers You Didn't Know Barbie Had

Two hundred. That’s how many careers that Barbie has had in the over sixty years since her debut in 1959, and this multi-talented Jackie-of-all-trades is showing no signs of retiring anytime soon. With a résumé as extensive as this one, there are bound to be a few surprises here and there. We’re taking a little peek into the “work history” section and reporting on the most surprising careers you didn’t know Barbie had.

Surgeon

Funko Rock Candy: 1973 Barbie Surgeon Action Figure

Barbie was teaching children what nurses do as early as 1961 and has since traversed the entire medical field as a doctor, dentist, veterinarian, ophthalmologist, and paramedic. Her stint as a surgeon was probably the most intense medical job that Barbie ever had, but she took up the challenge in 1973, complete with scrub tie cap and facial mask. Funko even brought the design back as a collectable vinyl figurine.

Film Producer

Barbie is no stranger to performance. She’s been a dancer, singer, rapper, musician, and actor, after all. (Are you still a triple threat when you can do more than three things?) But even Barbie needs to pursue new artistic challenges from time to time. Barbie tried out being on the other end of the camera in 2003 when she became an independent film producer as part of the 1 Modern Circle™ collection. No word yet on the Rotten Tomatoes reviews.

Robotics Engineer

Barbie Robotics Engineer Doll

The past ten years have seen a technological explosion, and Barbie was up to the challenge, taking on jobs as a computer engineer in 2010 and a game developer in 2016. In 2018, she decided to take further strides into the technology by adding robotics to the list. Her robotic creation and laptop showing a related computer program are meant to inspire young minds to explore the wonders of the STEM field.

US Marine Corps

The marine corps is known for having one of the most rigorous training regiments of all the US military. Barbie apparently not only put in the work but had the grit and determination to be promoted to sergeant in 1991. This is especially impressive given that of the nearly 200,000 marines serving at that time, only about .5 percent of them were women. Of course, knowing Barbie, we shouldn’t be surprised. She was also in the army, navy, and air force, after all.

McDonald’s Cashier

Barbie Loves McDonald's Playset New Sealed Mattel 1982 VHTF #Mattel | Barbie, Vintage barbie dolls, Mattel barbie

Given she’s been the president of the United States, a McDonald’s cashier may be one career you didn’t know Barbie had. But in 1983, Barbie showed everyone that every career is important by joyfully taking a job at the globally recognized fast food chain. While no one has asked her opinion about her time at McDonald’s, we’re sure she was loving it.

The Best DIY Hacks for Cosplay

The Best DIY Hacks for Cosplay

Anyone can cosplay, no matter your age, shape, or background. Still, any of the best DIY hacks for cosplay will save you money and time from laborious sewing and crafting. Take note of each of these hacks and how they can better your cosplay experience and costume design.

Think Outside the Box with Costume Materials

Even if it’s not your first cosplay experience, you don’t need to be an expert sewer or knitter to create an elaborate piece. Instead, get creative with your costume materials. For instance, puff paint creates a great fake embroidery that will baffle others. Embroidery is not an easy skill, but you can create the same illusion using puff paint as a base. Outline the detail in puff paint and sew around this layer for the visual effect. Another trick is to use hand socks for unnatural skin colors, including green, purple, red, or blue. Instead of painting your whole body this color, have a set of colored gloves that match the desired skin tone. You’ll save precious time and energy from painting your whole body, especially if you’ll be attending a hot, crowded convention later.

Hot Glue Goes a Long Way

Another great DIY trick is to use hot glue. Hot glue guns are great for cosplay because they can create perfect miniature details. You might not be a skilled artist, and that’s perfectly okay. Consider hot glue as a cheap, easy option. Simply trace over your design with hot glue, whether armor, clothes, or accessories. Highlighting a shield or tiara is easy with this hack. Hot glue remains in place for a considerable amount of time after it dries, meaning you won’t need to fuss with the finished result.

Take Time Finding Fabrics

Every cosplayer knows the importance of finding the right cosplay fabrics for their costume. Still, at the end of the day, everyone just wants to look their best. That’s why you must take the time to find the best fabrics for your specific costume. Some of the most popular options include natural fibers, like cotton, linen, and silk, or synthetic fibers, like nylon, spandex, or neoprene. Each of these has its own advantages and disadvantages, so take your time researching each one and how it fits your character. For example, a Renaissance period costume requires wool but not spandex, or vice versa for a modern superhero’s costume, depending on the level of authenticity you desire.

Save Some Money and Thrift

The final DIY hack for cosplay is to hit the thrift shop. Thrifting is one of the easiest ways to save money in cosplay, especially for those who frequently wear or create different costumes. While creating a costume from scratch is fun, materials and labor cost time and money. Do yourself and your wallet a favor and thrift shop for older or previously worn clothes, as these are cheaper than costume stores or other retail outlets. Thrift stores also have different styles and sizes that are great for experimenting with different looks.

And when all else fails, you can always consult The Cosplay Handbook and watch our video on the Top 10 Famous Cosplayers for some inspiration!

Top 20 Disney Movie Merch for Adults

These products will make your everyday a little more magical. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 20 Must-Have Disney Merch for Adults.

We’ll be looking at the best Disney-themed products which appeal primarily to adults, that you can buy on Amazon— whether from Disney itself or from other companies.

Keep in mind that if you make a purchase through our affiliate links below, WatchMojo may earn a commission.

Let’s begin!

Mickey Mouse 2 Slice Toaster

When you’re getting ready for work or school, mornings can feel rushed and honestly kind of dreary. But if you want to inject a little bit of fun and Disney magic into your breakfast routine, this product is perfect. This two slice toaster has a bold design featuring the House of Mouse’s most iconic figure, and not only that but it also prints a little “hidden Mickey” onto your toast! It features browning control so you can get your toast exactly how you like it. If you’ve got little ones at home, this can definitely make them eat their breakfast more readily.

Mickey Mouse Cheese Board With Cheese Tools

Another excellent addition to any Disney fan’s kitchen is this Mickey Mouse Cheese Board. Shaped like Mickey’s head, it’s actually perfect for displaying a variety of snacks while also proudly showing off your Disney devotion. It’s made with rubberwood, which will ensure long-lasting durability. It has a convenient storage drawer and comes with matching stainless steel cheese tools that fit perfectly inside- which are all stamped with the classic mouse ears. Your next dinner party or wine and cheese event will be complete with this on the table!

Disney Dreams Collection Thomas Kinkade Studios Coloring Book

Thomas Kinkade is one of America’s most recognizable artists, and he has done plenty of work with Disney over the years. This coloring book for adults and kids lets you add your own creative spin to his much-loved images which depict scenes from the most popular Disney animated films. You can aim to recreate his emblematic style, or create something that is entirely your own. The book features 63 images, which are laid out across from the corresponding coloring pages, so you can get inspiration from the master himself.

Belle Rose “Beauty and the Beast” Baseball Cap

Sometimes you want to show off your Disney pride without abandon, but sometimes you might be looking for a more subtle addition to your wardrobe that acts almost like a secret handshake for Disney fans. This women’s baseball cap is embroidered with a simple red rose on the front, which any regular person may take for a standard aesthetic design. But the true believers will recognize it instantly from Beauty and the Beast. The back of the cap features a cheeky message reading “I only date beasts”.

Princess-Themed Women’s Jogger Lounge Sweat Pants

If you live near a Disney store or frequent the theme parks often, you have plenty of opportunities to pick up new officially-licensed Disney merch for your wardrobe, but did you know you can also get it online? The loungewear trend definitely isn’t going anywhere any time soon, and these princess-themed sweatpants are the perfect thing for sleeping in, or wearing while you work from home! The best part is that they feature some of Disney’s most badass characters, like Jasmine, Moana, Ariel, Pocahontas, Rapunzel, Merida and Mulan.

The Ultimate Disney World Cookbook

Many people head to the Disney parks for the rides and attractions, but one of the lesser-known pleasures is the wonderful food. Disney devotees all have their favorite restaurants and dishes, and with this cookbook you can learn to create some of them at home. The Ultimate Disney Cookbook features many recipes from the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios, as well as special recipes from The Epcot Food and Wine Festival. There’s even a recipe for the mysterious “grey stuff” from Beauty and The Beast.

Wine Tumbler

These days, there’s nothing we want more than to be able to go to the Disney parks. So this cup will not only help you drown your sorrows, but also express your frustration. Disney is truly the most magical place on Earth, and we’re all a little down when we’re not there, which is why this tumbler that reads “I wine because I’m not at Disney” is just perfect. The mug is BPA-free and made of stainless steel, and the phrase is engraved, which means it will be long-lasting even after many washes.

Classic Mickey Waffle Maker

Mickey Waffles are sold at various locations throughout the Disney theme parks, but unlike many other popular food items, they’re pretty much impossible to recreate at home unless you have the right equipment. That’s where the Mickey Waffle Maker comes in. Made with brushed stainless steel, this device makes one 7″ Mickey Mouse-shaped waffle at a time. And the non-stick surface ensures that your waffles come out perfectly every single time. Whether you’re serving young ones, or just the young at heart, this will make your breakfast a little more magical.

American Tourister Disney Hardside Luggage With Spinner Wheels

Whether you’re traveling to the most magical place on Earth, or just going on a business trip, you want to make sure everyone knows about your Disney fandom. You’re in luck: American Tourister makes a variety of different luggage designs featuring distinctive Disney images. Depending on how bold or subtle you want to be, there’s a pattern for you! The luggage comes in both checked baggage or carry-on sizes, and you can buy them individually or in a set. Let’s just say there’s no way you’ll miss your bag at the carousel once you have these.

Mickey Mouse Oval Slow Cooker

If you want to bring even more Disney cheer to your kitchen, look no further. This Mickey Mouse Slow Cooker is sure to put a smile on your face every time you look at it. Whether you use it to make a standard soup or chili for your family or to attempt to recreate some of Disney’s most famous recipes, it’s the perfect addition to any superfan’s home. It has a 5-quart capacity, meaning you have flexibility to make a variety of recipes, and it also comes with a 20-ounce dipper which can be used for sauces and appetizers of all kinds.

WatchMojo’s Person of the Decade! In a new Bracket format!

We’ll be revealing the first round of each quadrant over the next 4 days!

How do you pick the Person of the Decade?

In honour of the end of the 2010’s, and as part of our BEST OF THE DECADE series, WatchMojo wanted to do something special to select our choice for Person of the Decade. We decided we’d create an NCAA style competition bracket to determine who had the best 10 year period. We weighed a lot of different factors in terms of their consistent success, overall success, versatility, personality and more. We also broke it down into 4 different quadrants: Movies, TV, Sports and Music.

This was not an easy process! Our internal teams argued endlessly over some of the matchups and we had to make some tough decisions. Ultimately, we won’t be able to please everyone, but there is no denying that the winners of each quadrant were at the top of their game for the past 10 years.

Tune in on Monday the 16th!

The full video will be available to watch on Monday, December 16th on our YouTube Channel and in the days leading up we will be revealing the individuals included in the first round by quadrant. So, tomorrow, we will update this post with the first round of the Movies category. Come check it out and let us know who you think should win each match up!

We’re excited about this new format and can’t wait to create more videos in this style. Please leave a comment if you have ideas for what to “bracketify” next! In the meantime, check out our Best of 2019 series for the best and worst of pop culture in 2019!

WatchMojo’s Best of the Decade! Help us rank the last 10 years!

WatchMojo has always been about audience involvement as well, and for this Best of the Decade special feature, we need you more than ever to help us rank a whole bunch of new lists.

Below you will find links to all the brand new voting pages that we have created specifically for this series. You can vote right away on these lists!

Emmy Awards 2019: Winners, Surprises & Twitter Reactions

No Host, No Problem?

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards took place last night and if you decided against sitting through the entire live show, don’t worry, all you missed was the show running unconventionally short, no host, comedian Thomas Lennon throwing in questionable voice-over commentary, and surprisingly no awards for “Veep” and “Game of Thrones” being humbled by their unusually low on-screen trophy count.
