Here’s What You Need to Know About Momo

Have You Seen This Image??? We’ve Got You Covered.

Ever since Kim Kardashian took to Instagram to warn her millions of followers about a so-called “Momo Challenge”, the internet has been flooded with news reports, Tweets and Facebook posts circulating the unsettling (and downright creepy) image below:

The "Momo"/"Mother Bird" sculpture of a face with bulging eyes and a wide, threatening grin

So what is the “Momo Challenge”? And is it actually real? Well, we’ve got all the answers for you here.

Momo Who?

For starters, the image is actually of a sculpture called “Mother Bird” created by Japanese special effects company, Link Factory for a horror-themed art gallery. The challenge on the other hand, according to multiple news outlets, centers around children and therefore begins in the places they spend the most (often unmonitored) time, such as YouTube videos, TV shows or even online games. The shocking image above is said to be embedded unexpectedly into programs as well-known as “Peppa Pig”, alongside a message that urges children to commit violent acts or harm themselves. The message even goes as far as to threaten to harm them or their family if they ignore it or seek help. So needless to say, this is some pretty dark stuff.

Is It Real?

Well, as scary as it sounds, fear not, because apparently it’s all an old hoax. According to The Atlantic, this image and stories about Momo actually started almost a year ago when local news outlets across the U.S. reported that the challenge was spreading among teens on WhatsApp, following a Facebook post by a concerned parent. Naturally, the panic was propelled by the media through posters and reports like this…

When in reality, as CTV (among many others) points out,

“While police agencies in Canada and the United Kingdom have issued warnings about the challenge, they were all based on secondhand information – not on any specific reports they had received. In fact, there have not been any official reports of individual incidents related to the Momo Challenge.”

Not to mention, a spokesperson for YouTube said that even if these videos had been made, they would be taken down instantly for violating YouTube’s policies (we can definitely attest to this argument).

So We Good?

Essentially, nothing has been proven to be true so yes, we good. Well…we still have this terrifying image that’s basically impossible to dodge on the internet…But otherwise, we fine. Hopefully this challenge and it’s recent popularity haven’t caused any legitimate harm, but it looks like this might just be another case of parents getting worked up over potential online “dangers” and media sources propagating these fears. Tide pods anyone???

Top 5 Dumbest Decisions in Horror Video Games

Maybe They Did Deserve to Die…

Fear can sometimes get the better of us all, especially when facing something not of this world. That being said, some of the choices these characters made were beyond the pale of stupidity, even going by horror game standards!

#5: Daniel Pockets the Orb
“Amnesia: The Dark Descent” (2010)

If you deliberately wiped your own memory, chances are your past self made some fairly serious mistakes. Awakening in a strange castle without any memories, Daniel’s only clue to the truth was a self-written note advising him to kill the building’s baron. Over the course of the campaign, Daniel manages to piece together the truth, and surprise, surprise, it isn’t pretty. Turns out that during an archaeological expedition, Daniel discovered an alien orb, and in doing so summoned a sentient shadow very eager to rip him a new one. Daniel’s solution? Seek refuge with Baron Alexander…who ended up wanting the orb for himself. And the bad decisions just keep on coming.

#4: Leon & Claire Split Up
“Resident Evil 2” (1998)

Just because something works on “Scooby-Doo,” does not mean it makes sense during a zombie outbreak. Due to “Resident Evil 2” featuring a pair of playable characters, Capcom needed to find a believable excuse to split these badasses up. A rookie cop and a college student searching for a family member, Leon and Claire parted ways almost instantly to go search for survivors and an escape route out of Raccoon City. Surrounded by hundreds of zombies, splitting up makes little to no sense, but the game needed Leon and Claire’s stories to diverge, so there you go. Of course, Leon’s fabulous hair is really all the back-up he needs…

#3: Pranking Hannah
“Until Dawn” (2015)

Pranks are all well and good, at least until someone tries to put it on Youtube. Don’t think we didn’t see that selfie-stick Matt! A choose-your-own adventure game with a slasher twist, it begins as all great horrors do, with a group of teenagers hanging out in a cabin in the woods. Seeing an opportunity to be total jerks, the majority of the group play a disgraceful prank on Hannah, who flees out of the cabin as a result, eventually followed by her sister Beth. Given the genre, the woods are far from the safest place to be, and both siblings soon find themselves meeting a rather…steep end.

#2: James Investigates Silent Hill
“Silent Hill 2” (2001)

Guilt and grief can drive a person to make really terrible decisions, evident from when James Sunderland received a letter claiming to be from his deceased wife, apparently waiting for him in the town of Silent Hill. Rather than investigating the authenticity of the letter, assembling a team or better yet, throwing it away, James decides to take plunge and head on over. Taking into account the fact that Mary died years prior, the dude must have been aware that the letter could not be real, but noooope. Thanks to his overwhelming shame and inner torment manifesting itself, James’ spent most of his vacation in Silent Hill trying to avoid alone-time with Pyramid Head!

#1: Removing SHODAN’s Ethical Constraints
“System Shock” (1994)

Playing as a nameless hacker, “System Shock” boils down to a boneheaded decision to remove an omnipotent computer’s moral compass. Caught hacking into a space station owned by the TriOptimum Corporation, our hero is offered a way out by a corrupt executive who needs the space station’s artificial intelligence to be hacked. After coming to an agreement, the protagonist removes the restrictions governing SHODAN’s decision-making process and unwittingly creates a super-villain. Untethered by any moral guidelines, the AI becomes a self-declared god and kills nearly everyone in the station. Smooth move buddy.

Top 5 Greatest Animated Movie Franchises

They Went to Infinity and Beyond

Sequels have a reputation for taking great original flicks and contorting them into something well below sub-par, especially in the world of animation. As it happens, these five haven’t only managed to overcome this cinematic curse, but going to excel with each new entry!

#5: “The Lego Movie” franchise (2014-)

A film series based on Lego blocks really could have gone either way. Movie audiences were pleasantly surprised upon the release of “The Lego Movie” in 2014 however, when they received a film that was witty, engaging, and a whole lot of fun. Two spin offs were released in 2017: “The Lego Batman Movie” and “The Lego Ninjago Movie” and there are already several other planned installments to the franchise. The original film managed to score 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the positive reviews were certainly well deserved, significant buzz for its 2019 sequel, which coincidentally also managed to deliver on the quality!

#4: “The Incredibles” franchise (2004-)

When Pixar makes an “incredible” film, they know their fans will be willing to wait for a sequel. As with “Finding Nemo”, we had to wait more than a decade to be reunited with this super family, but it was totally worth it. “The Incredibles” is not just a great animated film, but has been called one of the best superhero movies ever made. The follow up was just as enjoyable, and fans can only hope that director Brad Bird will continue to follow these characters for another installment- but maybe don’t make us wait 14 years this time?

#3: “Shrek” franchise (2001-)

Sometimes animated films are made strictly for children’s enjoyment, but creators really hit the mark when parents can equally enjoy their movies. Such is the case with “Shrek”, a series that offers simple laughs for the kids and more nuanced jokes for grown ups, sometimes in the same breath. After “Despicable Me”, this series is the second most successful animated film franchise; thanks to various generations of viewers falling in love with this cantankerous ogre since 2001. Should another instalment materialize, we’d happily spend more time in this fairy tale land.

#2: “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise (2010-)

You might be surprised by how many DreamWorks films made our list, but the company knows how to build a franchise deserving of praise. And of all the DreamWorks franchises discussed, this one is surely among the best. The original “How to Train Your Dragon” movie was released in 2010, and surprised audiences with its compelling storyline and emotional heart, proving that this studio is capable of competing with the House of Mouse. The 2014 sequel was a solid follow-up that expanded upon its predecessor both in terms of scope and character development. All the while “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” managed to secure the trilogy as a modern great!

#1: “Toy Story” franchise (1995-)

The concept behind this enormously successful Pixar franchise is simple: what would happen if your toys came to life when you weren’t looking? The result though is supremely entertaining, delivering laughs while also tugging at the heartstrings. We’ve fallen in love with Andy’s toys over the years, and now the first generation who saw the original film in theatres is able to share it with their own kids. Though there have been several delays in production, it looks like “Toy Story 4” will finally be hitting theatres in the summer of 2019.

New POKÉMON Detective Pikachu Trailer: Details & Fan Reactions

Pika Pika!

Ryan Reynolds recently took to Twitter to share an “Inside the Actor’s Studio” spoof called “Outside the Actor’s Studio,” where he recounted his dedicated and deeply invested approach to preparing for the role of Detective Pikachu, while getting roasted by his wife Blake Lively, of course:

What started as an entertaining short parody, quickly turned into a promo for a second and more detailed trailer! It’s safe to say fans were eager for more information, considering how little the first teaser revealed about the upcoming Pokémon film, so check it out here:

This new trailer shares the film’s primary plot which follows Detective Pikachu on his journey to uncover his past and the whereabouts of his previous trainer Harry Goodman, an ace detective. The trailer also reveals some pretty awesome battle scenes and a powerful Mewtwo reveal! In terms of other classic Pokémon that make a cameo, we noticed Charizard, Machamp, Snubbull, Ludicolo, Lickitung, Bulbasaur, Cubone, Snorlax and Eevee. Some Pokemon have adorably successful live-action incarnations, while others could use some work, but regardless, fans are more than ready for the film to hit theatres this May. Check out some hilarious Twitter reactions below!

What did you think of the new Detective Pikachu trailer? Let us know in the comments if you’re excited for the film and check out the video below for our detailed breakdown of the first trailer!

Top 5 Anime Characters That Returned Badass

From Boys to Men; Anime Edition

Every shounen hero and villain needs to start off small before they can fully establish themselves beasts in their respective shows. Normally the process is rather gradual, often fuelled by character growth and maturity. Not with these five, whose changes were so radical and sudden it took everyone by surprise. Can’t argue with the results though!

#5: Asemu Asuno
“Mobile Suit Gundam AGE” (2011-12)

Speaking of next generations. When we were first introduced to the son of prior protagonist Flit, he was just a carefree lad. Cut to a few years later, and now he’s a goddamn space pirate. Inheriting the determination of his father while also standing as much more of a flawed character, Asemu—we mean “Captain Ash”, quickly became a highlight of the final arc, especially since his Gundam AGE-2 got a badass new coat of paint. Sorry Kio, but there is no way you can outshine your papi.

#4: Kurapika
“Hunter x Hunter” (2011-14)

Let’s be honest here, while the Scarlet Eyes trick was pretty cool, this Hunter still wasn’t exactly on the same level as the likes of Hisoka or Killua…at least until he came back with those chains. After getting some much-needed training off-screen, Kurapika returned and was finally able to get his vengeance on a member of the Phantom Troupe, all thanks to his new weapon of choice. Able to conjure up chains with a multitude of killing traits, the moment we found out Kurapika had become a Specialist purely to exterminate the Spider, he jumped up several spots in out books.

#3: Natsu Dragneel
“Fairy Tail” (2009-)

We won’t pretend that the Salamander wasn’t a powerhouse to begin with, after all, he had managed to burn right through rival wizards, demons and everything else under the sun. That being said, he still managed to top it all when he made his grand return after a couple of years of intense training, complete with a rather fitting mullet. Throw in the fact he set a princess’ castle on fire simply as a way to announce his plan to get the gang back together, Natsu showed that time had only made his stones bigger!

#2: Naruto Uzumaki
“Naruto: Shippuden” (2007-17)

Maturity and Naruto don’t tend to go hand in hand. While his chihuahua-like personality was always part of his charm, it was still refreshing to see how the Jinchuruki had found a way to evolve as a character after training at the land of the frogs. Arriving just in the nick of time during Pains assault on Konoha, Naruto dons a badass new coat very reminiscent of his fathers. With his new sage mode in tow, Naruto manages to quickly take down most of the paths of pain. He may still be knuckle-headed, but at least he stepped up his game in this dramatic moment.

#1: Usopp
“One Piece” (1999-)

We’re still struggle to come to grips that the long-nosed marksman actually managed to pull such an incredible one eighty. Sure, all the members of the Straw Hat crew got a boost during the two years they spent powering up, but this is Usopp we’re talking about. He’s hilarious, but he ain’t no Zoro. At least until we saw him casually make his reappearance, buffed up beyond belief, and armed to the teeth with a crazy amont of nature-based weaponry. This turnaround is such a miracle that it’s only fitting that Usopp ended up earning the moniker of God down the line.

Top 5 Expensive Movies That Suck

So Much Money, So Little Profit

As moviegoers have experienced time and time again, the size of a film’s budget doesn’t equate to its overall quality. The almighty dollar may have afforded these flicks some great actors and some decent special effects, but it’s fair to say that many found the end results to be creatively bankrupt!

#5: “Catwoman” (2004)

The only positive thing to come out of this superhero train wreck was Halle Berry’s speech at 2005’s Razzies. Originally planned as a spin-off to Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns,” the script languished in development hell for years before Halle Berry donned the leather costume. In a plot hinging on an evil cosmetics company and mystical cats who grant magical abilities, “Catwoman” seems to be too distracted by the lead actress’ hypersexuality to give a damn about anything else. Listed among Roger Ebert’s most hated films, this Warner Bros. product is not even good enough for a laugh.

#4: “The Last Airbender” (2010)

Even in a filmography that contains”After Earth,” “The Last Airbender” is what most would consider M. Night Shyamalan at his absolute worst. This live-action film took a beloved Nickelodeon franchise and crapped all over it. Failing to even get the protagonist’s name right, this $150 million mess garnered near-universal disdain from critics, who were a lot kinder than fans of the cartoon. In an attempt to justify the negative reception, Shyamalan insisted the film was designed for nine-year-olds and blamed adults for wanting something similar to “Transformers.” Even if that was the intention, “The Last Airbender” feels like it was written by a nine-year-old.

#3: “Green Lantern” (2011)

So far, DC has been the king of underwhelming blockbusters with inflated budgets and dubious narrative choices. Prior to Ryan Reynolds’ run as the Merc with a Mouth, the Canadian actor’s career suffered an unexpected blow with “Green Lantern,” a commercial and critical flop that prompted Warner Bros. to cancel any plans for a franchise. Suffering from a meandering screenplay, tone problems, and an instantly forgettable villain, “Green Lantern” works as a pilot for a mediocre TV series, but left a lot to be desired as a big budget action film. In hindsight, DC’s movie is best viewed as the set-up for a “Deadpool” punchline.

#2: “Battlefield Earth” (2000)

A devoted Scientologist, John Travolta fought tooth and nail to adapt this 1982 novel written by the movement’s founder. Rather than spread the good word, “Battlefield Earth” solidified Scientology as a joke that never fails to bring the laughs. Featuring some of Travolta’s worst – or, depending on how you look at it, best – acting and, arguably, the dumbest wigs in cinematic history, “Battlefield Earth” swept that year’s Golden Raspberry awards and, eventually, won “Worst Picture of the Decade.” Frankly, we cannot think of a film more deserving of such an honor.

#1: “Suicide Squad” (2016)

While not necessarily the worst film on this list, David Ayer’s chaotic superhero blockbuster is the most disheartening. Bolstered by a thrilling cast that includes Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Viola Davis, “Suicide Squad” suffers from an identity crisis due to DC trying to mimic Marvel after the poorly received “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” Overburdened with too many paper-thin characters and an unfocused storyline that flip-flops between gritty and silly, “Suicide Squad” possessed all the right pieces, but failed to fit them together.

5 MORE Celeb Disses at Award Shows

The Oscars Are Coming And So Is The Shade

These stars may have be awarded for their triumphs in the entertainment industry, but we’re putting our hands together to celebrate some smack talk! Over on our YouTube channel, we went over the 10 most memorable call-outs including Fifth Harmony’s subtle Camila Cabello diss, Reese Witherspoon throwing shade at Kim Kardashian and more. These award show disses are legendary, so here are 5 more!

Selena Gomez vs Beauty Industry

When Selena Gomez took the stage to accept her award for favorite female artist at the 2016 American Music Awards, it was her first public appearance in months, following putting a pause on her tour to focus on her mental health. She took the time to not only thank her fans for supporting her through it all, but to critique Instagram’s beauty standards, telling everyone to stop focusing on the physical and start following their hearts instead. We hear you Selena!

Nick Cannon vs Eminem

Round one of the infamous Eminem/Mariah Carey fight was Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed”, followed by round 2 with Eminem’s “The Warning”. Round 3 was an unexpected diss track from Carey’s then husband Nick Cannon, called “I’m A Slick Rick”, but that wasn’t enough? Nope, Cannon decided to take one more swing at Slim Shady during the 2011 BET Awards, where he took part in a Kevin Hart skit and got irked on the the point of saying: “I will whoop Eminem’s a**! I ain’t scared of him! Matter of fact, I will whoop any white boy’s name starts with M. Macaulay Culkin, Matthew McConaughey, Melanie Griffith!”

Tina Fey vs Online Bullies

We already know that Tina Fey has experience with mean girls, she wrote an entire movie about them! But when she took home the award for Best Actress TV Series Musical or Comedy at the 2009 Golden Globes, it was time to address the internet trolls, by name! She hilariously went through a list of usernames that continue to virtually tear her down and the audience couldn’t get enough. Turns out most celebrities can relate to Fey’s experience online.

Alicia Keys vs Makeup

No makeup? No problem. Alicia Keys gave an enormously powerful speech at the 2016 VMAs about love, unity and equality, where not only did she promote acceptance, but she did it without a drop of makeup. This may seem like a small feat to some, but given the beauty standards currently present within the entertainment industry, this was a moment worth mentioning. She even wrote an essay all about her #nomakeup journey on Lenny, in case you wanted to know more!

Miley Cyrus Vs Music Industry

She came in like a wrecking ball and so did her speech. Upon winning the 2014 VMA for Video of the Year with “Wrecking Ball”, the tables quickly turned when Miley Cyrus sent someone else to accept her award: a homeless man. He commented on the imbalance between the issues faced by homeless youth in Los Angeles and the astounding profit made by the music industry every year, prompting the crowd to donate and help everyone realize their dreams. Hey a diss is a diss, even when it’s as honourable as this.

Top 5 Movie Flops That Deserve a Remake

Anotha One!

We’ve reached the end of the week which means it’s time to take a look at the best of the suggest! As you probably know by now, we picked 3 interesting ideas left on our Suggest Page this week and are giving them some much-deserved attention right here! But first, we posted the top 3 to our community tab over on YouTube and asked you guys which list was your favourite. According to the results, this week’s Top Suggested Idea is: Top 10 Movie Flops That Deserve a Remake! Based on your votes (which you can still leave if you disagree by clicking on the suggestion below), here are 5 movies that didn’t quite reach their full potential and could use a cinematic tune up.

#5: Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Like most of the entries on this list, the reason for this film’s crash was largely on account of high production and advertising costs that simply far outweighed the post-release profits. The below-average reviews that critiqued Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne’s chemistry, among other creative decisions, a lack of brand power that sci-fi films like “Guardians of the Galaxy” can coast on and unfamiliar source material, were too much for “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” to overcome.

#4: The Spirit

Frank Miller’s neo-noir style superhero thriller, based on Will Eisner’s comic strip of the same name, was a certified financial flop and critical catastrophe. Having been released in 2008 when superhero movies like “Iron Man” and “The Dark Knight” were crushing the box-office, “The Spirit” simply could not compete, with critics harmoniously yelling at Miller’s directorial decisions and a release date that definitely didn’t help (Christmas day? Really?). The film’s stars Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson have since taken on new characters in the MCU, so a remake would require some fresh faces. Thoughts? Vote on the list above!

#3: The Lone Ranger

Victim to countless setbacks, including production delays, a potential cancelation and budget inflation, “The Lone Ranger” simply didn’t stand a chance. Critics ripped the film apart as soon as they could, complaining about the plot, the length and the decision to cast Johnny Depp as Tonto, a Native American. The result was another significant loss for Disney at the box-office. Do you think this film deserves a remake? Vote on the list above!

#2: John Carter

Considering this film, about a Civil War veteran who reluctantly becomes Mars’ hero, lost Disney $200m and became known as their “biggest flop of all time”, it’s safe to say a remake couldn’t do much more harm. The film’s demise was largely attributed to poor marketing and a weak trailer, which was a shame since a number of fans thought the environment and creatures in the world the filmmakers aimed to create had a ton of potential. What do you think? Vote on the list above if you’d be in for a redo!

#1: Green Lantern

The entry on this list that received the most votes was by far “Green Lantern”, the 2011 film based on DC Comics’ green power ring successor. Although the movie succeeded in remaining faithful to the original comic, the overwhelming consensus from fans, supported by a box-office bomb, was that it was tarnished by some pretty terrible CGI, among other things. Ryan Reynolds, who plays the titular character Hal Jordan, has publicly acknowledged the film’s missteps and has luckily found his superhero success in Deadpool, but what about the film’s own redemption? Well, it turns out the intergalactic peace keeping force will be ready for a fresh start in the DCEU in 2020’s “Green Lantern Corps”.

Which movie flop do you think deserves a remake? Let us know in the comments and don’t forget to leave your own idea on our Suggest Tool; we might feature it next week!
