The Pen Is Mightier Than The Multiplayer
Not all games place emphasis on a well-written story, but when they do its easy to separate the decent from the phenomenal. Narratives in modern games have evolved to such a point that they can conjure emotions from audiences just as easily as any film or book, with a select few being so potent that they stay with us days after we have stepped away from our screens.
Luckily, the Writer’s Guild of America shares this viewpoint, as they have have recently announced the four contenders whose stories truly sparkled during 2017, and lets just say we are a little surprised by a few of the nominations.
According to an article on Gamespot –
The Writers Guild of America has announced its nominees for best video game writing for 2017, with Madden NFL 18, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and others making the list.
A Madden game getting a writing nomination may sound odd. But this year’s game has a story-focused mode called Longshot featuring Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali. It tells the twisting and turning story of a football player’s pursuit to make it to the NFL.
The other nominees this year for “Outstanding Achievement in Video Game Writing” include Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow.
The winners will be announced on Sunday, February 11. Panels comprised of video game writers and Writers Guild members will vote to determine the winner.
Horizon has become a household name thanks to its world, its robotic enemies, but most importantly its central focus on one woman’s journey to discover the truth about her heritage. While it may be the favourite to win, we can’t deny seeing Rosario Dawson as a supernatural assassin as well as Mahershala Ali bring actually character to a Madden game is certainly noteworthy.
